Tramps and Hawkers

Trad

Come a' you tramps and hawker lads,

and gaitherers o'blaw

That tramps the country roun' an' roun'

Come listen ane an' a'

I'll tell tae you a rovin' tale

O sichts as Ah hae seen

Far up intae the snowy north

An' south be Gretna Green.

Well I've seen the high Ben Lomond

A-towerin' tae the moon

An I've been by Creiff and Callendar

And roond be bonnie Doune.

I've seen Loch Ness'es silvery tides,

And places ill tae ken:

Far up intae the snowy north

Lies Urquharts fairy glen.

It's aft I've laffed untae masel'

As Ah trudged alang the road

Wi' a bag o'blaw upon ma back

My face as broon as a toad.

Wi' lumps o'cake an' tattie scones

Cheese and braxie ham

Ne'er thinkin' waur I'm comin' fae

Nor waur I'm gan tae gang.

For I'm happy in the summer time

Beneath the bright blue sky

Ne'er thinkin' in the mornin'

Whaur at night that I might lie.

Be it in a barn, or yet a byre

Or out among the hay

So lang's the weather doth permit,

I'm happy every day.

But I think I'll go tae Pady's Land,

I'm makin' up ma mind.

For Scotland's fairly altered noo,

Ayou it cannae raise the wind.

But I will trust in Providence,

If Providence proves true,

And I'll sing tae you of Erin's Isle

When I come back tae you.
